Chanel 11.12 Bag - The Medium Classic Double Flap Official Name!

Two Chanel 11.12 Bags, on the left a black Chanel medium flap, on the right a green Chanel medium flap

Have you ever wondered what the official name is for the iconic Chanel Classic Medium Double Flap bag? Let's delve into the history and details of this timeless piece of fashion.

What is the official name for the Chanel Classic Medium Double Flap?

The official change that took place to the name of the commonly known Medium Classic Double flap may have flown under the radar with all the other news circulating, but the official name for this coveted bag is the Chanel 11.12 bag. This designation may not be as commonly known as the more colloquial names, but it is the true title given by the fashion house.

Why is it called the Chanel 11.12 bag?

The numbering system used by Chanel for their handbags is based on the date of creation. In this case, the 11.12 bag was first introduced in February 1955, hence the name 11.12. This system helps to distinguish between the various styles and sizes of Chanel bags.

What makes the Chanel 11.12 bag so special?

The Chanel 11.12 bag is renowned for its timeless design, featuring the signature diamond quilting, inspired by the original 2.55 flap, reimagined the chain strap with interwoven leather between the hardware, and this is the very first item that ever featured the iconic interlocking CC closure, which is now more than just a turn lock closure, but a symbol and logo for the brand.

With its classic silhouette and impeccable craftsmanship, the Chanel 11.12 bag continues to be a staple in the fashion industry, transcending trends and remaining a symbol of elegance.

The renaming of the Medium Flap is actually reverting it back to what Karl Lagerfeld named it when it as such in the designing stages, and which is reflected in its style code, A01112. This renaming is a tribute to it's creator, which is also perhaps a little known fact.

A common misconception is that Gabrielle Chanel designed the Classic Flap. However she designed the Chanel 2.55 or the Reissue, the original, very first Chanel flap. It is Karl Lagerfeld that actually reworked the design of the Reissue into a newly imagined flap, thus creating the classic flap. This is one definitely his most significant and recognized contribution to Chanel's brand.

Today, the medium flap is the most coveted and instantly recognizable piece from Chanel. When you think of Chanel it's one of the first things that pop into mind. So this renaming, although may seem anticlimactic or insignificant as a name, actually has quite a lot of meaning behind it.

I think of course everyone will still commonly refer to is as the medium flap, but officially labelling it as the 11.12 is a nice way to recall the brand's heritage and lesser known history.
