A List of Ludicrously Capacious Bags to Love | Bags for Breakfast
No bag will be slandered at Bags for Breakfast, but if you've been on social media, you've surely seen the viral clip from the show Succession of the "ludicrously capacious bag." The attention this has got is the apex and perfect compliment to the recent trend of embodying an "old money aesthetic" or dressing like you have "quiet luxury" that has taken over. The viral Succession clip is the cherry on top for this trend, and for many it affirms that the old money aesthetic is the end all of any other style thanks to the "money talks but wealth whispers" sentiment.
And by the way, it's the way people are letting this fictional male character's opinion of one bag influence their style and how I'm sure there are people feeling insecure about their "loud luxury" bags...I don't know this is all so silly to me.
As a handbag boutique, one thing about us, is we love ludicrously capacious bags! If you insist on being boring, just say so.
Before I jump in on a list of ludicrously capacious bags I love, I just wanted to take a moment to write a bit about this general trend and help understand where the cultural fascination with this particular style is coming from.
The "old money" aesthetic, with its emphasis on traditional luxury and refinement, is seen as a marker of high social status and sophistication. The association of wealth with status in my opinion is something incredibly important to the United States, it is their brand.
The United States has a relatively short history, and the peak of the country's elite golden era is not so far away. The "old money" aesthetic, with its roots in European nobility and wealth, has been influential in shaping American style and culture, which is still fresh to those today trying to harness that nostalgia for the past bygone era of elegance and refinement.
It is also curious that all of a sudden this style is experiencing an overwhelming surge of attention. I blame the economy. With economic uncertainty, fashion is a great coping mechanism to reminisce on an aesthetic that represents a time when social and economic norms were more clearly defined, and there was a sense of stability and order that has become overwhelming to keep up with today and maybe that is an underlying reason people are clinging to this style at this particular time.
But this is a fashion blog, so let's get back to the bags and clothes. From what I have seen of people recreating this style, is so anti-style! I love some of the brands mentioned as part of the quiet luxury/old money trend, but would I purposely aim to dress head to toe in them or similar styles out of fear that having a visible logo will make the look cheap or tacky...no.
Life is short, why do you want to conform to a style that is influencing you to dress like you're in a uniform?? Express yourself, fashion can be whatever you want it to be, who cares if what you choose to wear has logos or print or not. This trends strips away fun and creativity and establishes a snobbish attitude towards anything that does not match the aesthetic which is the part I dislike the most about it. The most ironic part is that the version of "quiet luxury" that is being pushed insists on no logos, nothing flashy, minimal colour, very subdued...when in reality, old money and luxury are totally rooted in excess, which is kind of the opposite of what I'm seeing of how people are understanding this trend.
Anyway, here are some bags that are ludicrously capacious according to Tom from Succession, that I love and are super chic.
The YSL Icare Maxi Tote
These are my top three ludicrously capacious, gargantuan bags, that will fit your lunch, and flat shoes to go home in, and your emotional baggage, but most importantly are all must haves for the summer in the city, or by the beach.
Overall, don't be afraid to sport your XL handbag wherever you go! Comment below what you think of this trend, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
